… says Works Minister meeting with irrelevant personsResidents of Timehri North say they are not satisfied with the manner in which follow up meetings about their removal is progressing. The residents say selected persons are being called to the community/government meetings, while the Minister holding the housing portfolio is still to meet with residents.Public Relations Officer of the Timehri North Development Council Sherlanda Daniels told Kaieteur News that three follow up meetings were held last week but residents were not invited. She said residents were not aware that Minister Benn held meetings on Monday and Wednesday and thus did not attend. She told Kaieteur News that the development council understands that persons who work at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, whether they lived in the area or not, received invitations to attend the meetings which are supposed to be for the community.Daniels said that several airport staff members turned up to the meetings with the notion that it concerned the moving of their offices or working areas, but soon walked out after realizing that the meeting was about the residents removal. The PRO added that residents are seeking an audience with the Housing Minister Irfaan Ali since he would have to speak on the housing scheme that the community expects as part of their moving compensation.Daniels stated further that residents are calling for independent media persons to be allowed into the meetings. She said that last week’s meeting saw only members of the state-owned media being allowed. When contacted, Minister Benn told Kaieteur News that he met with Timehri residents on Wednesday, after notices were sent out. He said that it wasn’t a good turn out since “some 10 or 12 residents” attended the meeting which would have been the first for those persons in the Phase two category to be moved. He said that the meeting was fully recorded by GINA.The Minister said that airport officials also met with residents twice for last week.Timehri residents are being told however that they have to remove from their current location to facilitate the expansion of CJIA. They were told by the Works Minister that land is being provided for them at Yarrowkabra on the Linden /Soesdyke Highway. He said however that no special compensation would be given to the residents who were referred to as ‘squatters’.The residents are however peeved over this, especially those who say that they have been living in Timehri all their lives. Residents are further annoyed since they say that it was this administration, that permitted the community to develop the area for regularization. They say that their community has been in existence long before that of Khali Road which is also located in close proximity of the airport. “Yet,Authentic MLB Jerseys, that area has been regularized for years now with persons acquiring their land titles.”A meeting two weeks earlier saw residents letting out steam on the Public Works Minister. They had met with him for the first time after several calls were made by the community. They were further annoyed when they were locked out of that first meeting. It was however explained that the meeting was meant for persons in the immediate path of the airport’s expansion. The residents say that the Minister was adamant about their removal and that no compensation was meant for them. They see this however as a breach of their constitutional rights and are demanding full compensation and all amenities be put in place for their removal. |
