Anxious moments turned into despair as the search yesterday for taxi driver, Bomeshwar Sukhdeo, called Anil, who went missing a week ago turned up blank, dwindling hopes for his safe return.The team of police ranks and CPG members entering the cane fields in search of the missing driver.A search party comprising ranks from the Wales Police Station and a West Bank Demerara Community Policing Group (CPG) accompanied by a relative, scoured the lands aback of the Bel Vue Estate, following reports that a car was seen abandoned in the area.A fisherman, who said he was fishing in the area early yesterday morning reported to members of the CPG and they in turn contacted the police at Wales.Using two Toyota pick-up vehicles, the search team travelled to the area, some five miles off the main West Bank public road but the only sign that the car was there were tyre tracks.Sukhdeo, who is also called ‘Desperado’ or ‘Rush’, 39, of 162 Sixth Street, Industry, East Coast Demerara was last seen on Tuesday, at the car park outside of Guyana Stores Limited. He was wearing a cream T-shirt, blue denim pants and brown shoes. At the time he was driving a white Toyota EL Touring wagon HB 7419.The fisherman had indicated though that the car he had seen yesterday morning was a brown wagon with licence numbers 3355.However, not wanting to leave any stone unturned, the search team pursued the lead nevertheless. Members of the media, who had travelled to the West Bank after learning about the reports, were prevented from going to the spot where the vehicle was reportedly spotted.Initially, police at Wales claimed that they had no report of a car being spotted in the Bel Vue Backlands and it was not until members of the CPG and the media insisted that there was such a report that ranks agreed to join the search party.Speaking with members of the media yesterday, shortly before the search, Sukhdeo’s father-in-law said that relatives are very concerned for the safety of the taxi driver. He said that he too received a telephone call from a newspaper operative, informing him about the car-sighting report.“They (newspaper) got a message from police, I don’t know which police, that there is a vehicle in the canefields at Wales,” Sukhdeo’s father in law informed.According to the father-in-law, Sukhdeo was with him up to about 10:30 hours on the day he went missing.He dismissed suggestions that his son-in-law might have deliberately run off without informing relatives, since he claimed that Sukhdeo has a wife in Canada and an adorable four-year-old daughter.“His wife is living in Canada. She only went back on the 10th of January. It is very, very difficult for myself, my wife and the kid. We have to keep lying to the kid, we can’t tell the kid the truth. The last thing to have her under control is to say ‘well, look he gone up to Essequibo, he’s on a job and he gonna be overnighting’,” the missing taxi driver’s father-in-law told the media yesterday.He also disclosed that Sukhdeo’s wife became hysterical in Canada after learning about her husband’s fate.
