Although many programmes have been engaged with a view to preparing youths for the world of work, the Ministry of Education is yet working towards introducing a skills for life programme in the very near future.According to Education Minister, Shaik Baksh,Fernando Rodney Jersey, the programme which is deemed as vital will be complementary to the Behavioural Communication Certificate Programme (BCCP) which was initiated at some schools with much success.The Minister pointed out that the BCCP, which came on stream some four years ago, compares with a Caribbean programme called the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competency (CCSLC).He said that students at the end of the third year in the secondary school system can take this programme.He added that some Caricom countries, with the exception of Guyana, have included the programme in their systems.“Guyana is a bit hesitant at this point because we feel that the BCCP is a comparable programme.We will enter into discussions with the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) and to a large extent the CCSLC is modelled after the BCCP.”The Minister emphasised that Guyana may have pioneered the technical and vocational programme, even as he noted that there are some challenges that the Ministry faces with the continuance of the programme.According to the Minister, the sector does not have a sufficient quota of qualified teaching staff in either the technical or vocational aspects, adding that “we are moving towards training more and more people.”He pointed out that, while there is a technical teachers’ training programme at the Government Technical Institute,Deion Jones Falcons Jersey, only about 12 teachers graduate annually.For this reason, he said that the Ministry is prepared to open another centre in New Amsterdam with a view to doubling or even tripling the number of teachers that are trained in the system.“A task team was set up and has already reported.
