… contemplating use of GINA passes for all Govt. agencies – Dr LuncheonOn yet another occasion reporters have been turned away from the Office of the President (OP) because they were not in possession of what is fast becoming a controversial Government Information Agency (GINA) media pass. The Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr Roger Luncheon yesterday hosted a post-Cabinet Press briefing and when one of this newspaper’s reporters,Andrej Sekera Jersey, Gary Eleazar, turned up at the Office of the President, he was once again told that he would not be allowed in without a GINA pass and that his Guyana Press Association (GPA) accreditation was not acceptable.Subsequently Colin Smith who is the Editor for the Catholic Standard and local correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) presented his BBC pass and that was also rejected.Attempts were made by the security to see if the BBC pass would be allowable but this failed.Arianna Gordon of the Guyana Times as well as Victor Vanvield of Prime News were also turned away for not having a GINA pass, despite the fact that each person presented an identifiable pass.President of the Guyana Press Association Gordon Moseley yesterday expressed his disappointment at the actions of Office of the President saying that in the absence of a GINA media pass,Nike Charlotte Hornets Authentic Jerseys, ID documents such as the BBC or GPA press passes that were presented should be allowed. He said that the issue has not been resolved, and this has not been for a lack of trying on the part of the GPA, given that on no less than five occasions in recent times, scheduled meetings with the Press Unit of Office of the President have been cancelled by members of that entity, including Information Liaison Officer for the President Kwame Mc Coy.Dr Luncheon in seeking to address the issue yesterday said that they will not surrender accreditation to any firm or entity other than GINA. He told the media operatives that did manage to gain entry that he suspects it prevails everywhere, in that the state identifies and certifies the media practitioner who would be accredited to gain access to the state institutions, organs and officesDr Luncheon stated that what he perceives as a logical course of action to be taken is for the GINA accreditations to be used not just at OP or State House but at all government departments or agencies. He did state that this position is not cast in stone or has not been addressed in depth. On the occasion of President Bharrat Jagdeo’s most recent press briefing, Eleazar and other reporters were turned away for not having GINA passes. At that time Kaieteur News’ Editor-in-Chief, Adam Harris had emphasized that the Government can never legitimise who a reporter is. Harris said that this is the job of the media organisation and representative, which is the Guyana Press Association. He had said that Mc Coy is determined that GINA must be the sole agency to accredit journalists and described the position as “ridiculous and insane”.The KN Editor-in-Chief has instructed his reporters to refuse media passes issued by GINA.********************************Urgency expressed about capitalizing on Kuwaiti investment opportunitiesMinister Manniram Prashad (centre) flanked by the members of the Private Sector team that met with the Kuwaitis.Government and the local Private Sector are making a concerted effort to capitalize on the investment opportunities offered by the Kuwaitis on their recent visit to Guyana. When the Kuwaiti Prime Minister and his delegation visited Guyana on July 19,Alexander Wennberg Jersey, a number of Kuwaiti Private Sector Officials met with their local counterparts and engaged them in discussion on possible investment relationships between the two countries.According to Ramesh Dookhoo, Chairman of the Private Sector Commission (PSC), the Kuwaitis are “very interested in everything that we do in Guyana.” Dookhoo was the head of the local Private Sector panel that met with the visiting delegation. The parties engaged in discussions that covered a number of sectors including tourism,Calgary Flames Gear, manufacturing, banking, construction, agriculture, mining and commerce.According to Dookhoo, Kuwait may be a viable market for our tourism products considering the enthusiasm with which the local industry and its offerings was discussed. He noted that there were also discussions on the airline industry and the constraints therein for Guyana. There was also an offer for Guyana to post business plans on the Kuwaiti Chamber of Commerce website as a means of attracting Kuwaiti financiers,Cheap Nike Huarache Shoes, it was noted by Dookhoo that the site currently serves a business community of over twenty thousand companies.Guyana’s Private Sector team was headed up by Dookhoo, and included Clinton Williams, President of the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA) as well as the Chair of the PSC Committee on Trade and Investment. Also included in that team were Charlie DaSilva Vice-President of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association as well as the Executive Director of the PSC, Roubinder Rambarran.Minister of Trade and Industry, Manniram Prashad said that the Government wants to “do something and do something quick”. He noted that while the Private Sector representatives were meeting with their counterparts he was meeting with his equivalent, Ahmad Rashid Al Haroun, Kuwaiti Minister of Trade and Industry. The discussions from that meeting were parallel to the ones between the two Private Sector groups. The Kuwaitis are so serious about the matter, Prashad noted,Nike Vapor Max Plus Triple Black, that they proposed possible dates for the visits, from October of this year to January of next year. He said that “it is not often that a country of Kuwait’s wealth will insist on forming partnerships with a small country like ours and we must seize the opportunity”.In the discussion of the Private Sector groups there was also included information on tax laws, incentive regimes, land ownership policy and the economy. According to Prashad, many of the Government’s open door investment policies were pointed out to the Kuwaiti officials during those meetings. They were told that there are no taxes and penalties on Foreign Investment and the workings of Joint Ventures were discussed in detail.Rambarran has apparently been tasked with the directive of pulling the Private Sector together for the intended visit to Kuwait. He says that the panel will attempt to capture the essence of the local Private Sector and take it to Kuwait to show what the country has to offer. One of Guyana’s offerings that the Kuwaiti seemed to be very interested in was gold. According to DaSilva, when the mineral reserves of Guyana were pointed out to the Kuwaitis along with the mining constraints in the industry for local miners, they expressed interest in engaging in joint ventures in that sector as well.
