Works on the $113 million Acute Care Psychiatric hospital at the National Psychiatric Hospital compound, Canje, are expected to commence today.Yesterday Minister of Health Dr Leslie Ramsammy and other officials from the Ministry as well as the contractor signed the contract during a simple ceremony at the Ministry of Health boardroom.The project is expected to be completed within another 10 months and will be executed by Vishal Contracting Company with architectural work by Deen and Partners Architects. According to the project profile the building area will be a single flat T-shaped building 7,600 square feet.The structure will include 30 inpatient beds, 15 for males, 15 for females, eight critical care beds, six isolation/restraining cells, dining and television lounge. The sanitary block will include 12 shower units, one general space and two male and female areas.For the medical support team, there will be a doctor’s room, dressing room and a family visit room with safety bars. Nurses facilities in the building will include dressing and lockers for nurses, day/night beds for three nurses, fibertech work counters, drug storage space and bath area.Other works will see rehabilitation works being done to nine existing buildings in the compound. Work to be done on the building includes rehabilitation of floor, repainting of walls, repairs to shower units, replacement of pipes.According to Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy during the signing, the project is being funded by a special allocation from the Ministry. This money has been the single largest allocation towards the National Psychiatric Hospital,Borussia Dortmund Jersey, he added.The Minister added that this goes to show the government’s commitment towards improving mental health services in Guyana. He recalled the days when the National Psychiatric Hospital was among the best in the region.However the Minister noted that over the years the standards and services have deteriorated According to the Minister over the past three years the Government has spent some $100 M for rehabilitation works on buildings within the compound.Minister Ramsammy further noted that this time around focus will also be on upgrading human resources as well as better treatment for patients.The current facility has accommodation for some 170 patients while the new facility will be able to house 200 patients.
