BANGOR TOWNSHIP, MI For one last time, Bev Shelburg purchased "the usual" on Friday at the cafe area inside Target at the Bay City Mall.
"I bought popcorn and a diet Coke for the last time," said the Bangor Township resident. "I also got one pair of slippers for 89 cents and another for 99 cents."
The Target store at the mall, 4135 E. Saturday, Jan. 31.
As usual, Shelburg was at the mall on Friday, Jan. 30, with her mall walking buddies a group of 20 that always finishes the walk at the Target cafe. The tradition has become such routine, that the group actually threw a little farewell party, complete with cake, at the store on Thursday morning.
"Pat Stromer collected the money, and we got permission from Target and had cake," she said. "It was a farewell to Target. No one wanted it to close."
Target officials announced in November plans to close the 66,000 square foot Bay City Mall store, along with 10 others, by Feb. 1. Two other Michigan Target stores were are on that list, those in Monroe and Southfield. The other stores to be shuttered are located in Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota and Texas.
Evan Lapiska, a spokesman for Target, has said there are currently no plans to open another Target store elsewhere in Bay County. Other Target stores in the Great Lakes Bay Region are located in Kochville Township and Midland.
Target owns its location at the Bay City Mall and plans to Peuterey Sale market the building for sale, according to company officials.
Target is the second of the mall's four anchor stores to close this year. Sears closed its doors for good on Jan. 18. The remaining anchor stores are Younkers and JC Penney.
Marge Dutcher of Essexville, another member of the mall walking group, said Target's cafe provided a perfect place for her group to hang out and get to know each other.
"We would meet a lot of people walking and then go have a coffee at Target," she said, adding Target was also the place to pick up what they needed before heading home.

As those walkers made their journey through Target on Friday, there wasn't much left to drop in a basket.
Clothing areas were all but cleaned out, with eight to 10 racks of clothing ringing areas that were once full of merchandise. The jewelry cases were empty, as were the back walls that separate one area from another.
What cleaning supplies remained were moved to the front of aisles for easy access. But there wasn't a vacuum cleaner, rug shampooer or other large appliance to be found.
Departments with the most merchandise included cards, cosmetics, grocery, CDs, DVDs and books. The magazines had been completely wiped out.
In spite of dwindling merchandise, Jennifer Miller of Bay City was hoping to pick up a few Belstaff Outlet things for 6 month old Andrew.
"I'm bummed about it, she said of the store's closing. "I come here quite a bit."
Miller was one of a few shoppers pushing carts around the store, looking for a Moncler Sale bargain or two. But those big bargains just weren't there. One rack was marked 75 percent off, while most items that were on sale were 30 percent off.
