| On May 22, 2010, Kumarie Ramkellawan lost her husband Terry Bacchus who was shot dead on Water Street in the city.Bacchus was the owner of several businesses and property, including the Double Discount Store at Mon Repos on the East Coast of Demerara.Despite speculation and a subsequent dispute over his assets which has landed in the court, no one knows for sure who killed him and why.But Ramkellawan, the mother of his son, while fuming over the lack of justice for his murder now faces another dilemma, one which she claims is driving her out of her mind.Ever since Bacchus’ death, Ramkellawan is saying she has had to endure harassment from another section of her reputed husband’s family.First they seized his vehicles and threatened to throw her out of the house she shared with Bacchus at the time of his death, and had it not been for a court order, Ramkellawan and her son might have been on the streets by now.She now fears for her life as well as for the safety of her son, six-year-old Terrence, and states emphatically that she now feels like a hounded widow.As recent as last week she had the scare of her life when she observed that she was being followed by persons in a vehicle with two different licence plates. As it turned out, the occupants happened to be members of the other section of her reputed husband’s family.At the time of Bacchus’s death, Ramkellawan was not too involved in her husband’s business and was at a loss as to what he really owned. But thanks to the advice of her attorneys, she was able to prevent the pilfering of his assets.She moved to the court to secure his assets which were being demanded by his other relatives.She was subsequently made executrix of his estate although by then she had already lost the vehicles he had owned including a Lexus, until the final determination of the matter.She claims that since then her life has been a nightmare, even as she tries to continue her husband’s lucrative businesses.“They have been calling and threatening me, saying things like, ‘Yuh gon go like yuh husband.’ They will come to the business place in Regent Street. They would burst out big, big laugh, mocking me in every way,” Ramkellawan told this newspaper during an interview last week.She said that she has made several reports to the police at the Beterverwagting Station on the East Coast of Demerara and at Leonora on the West Coast.Ramkellawan had also reported the breaking into her bond at Anna Catherina and the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars in stock.Terry Bacchus’s tomb which was damaged shortly after his burial.“The neighbours told me that it was Terry’s relatives,” Ramkellawan stated, adding that one of them even threatened to burn the place down while she and her son were inside.“I am afraid to stay in the house at Anna Catherina. They even broke up his (Terry) tomb. I cried that whole day when I saw what they did to it,Nike Baseball Jerseys Authentic,” the woman cried.Things reached breaking point last Monday while Ramkellawan was in Georgetown.She related that she was at her business place in the Regent Street, when she saw the sister of her late husband’s ex-wife come in.According to Ramkellawan, she subsequently learnt that his ex-wife was also in the building and she became afraid since she sensed that they had come to harm her.She left the business and upon checking outside, she noticed a familiar white Toyota Tundra was parked opposite the business location.Ramkellawan said that she immediately decided to go to her attorney to apprise him of what was transpiring.After boarding a taxi, the businesswoman observed that the white Tundra was trailing her.“When I tell the taxi driver what was happening, he told me not to take any chances and he contacted two ranks who were part of a police motorcycle patrol.The Tundra was intercepted and Ramkellawan proceeded to the Brickdam Police Station to make an official report.While there, the occupants of the Tundra were brought in and she was shocked to see one of the arresting ranks holding a firearm which he claimed was retrieved during a search of the vehicle.The police also informed that the front and rear licence plates of the vehicle were different.Ramkellawan said that she is very afraid since the persons were released from police custody almost immediately after she had given a statement.A police source confirmed the detention of the persons who were trailing the businesswoman, but indicated that the owner of the weapon that was found is a licenced firearm holder, although his gun licence had not been renewed for three years.The source, however, could not say if charges were instituted against the suspects.“After I left the station, I got calls from persons who boasted that they were released. They told me that I had more things to face,” Ramkellawan related.“I can’t feel safe because my husband was killed and nothing happened,” she concluded. |
