In light of the current situation of a spontaneous combustion at the Haags Bosch landfill site at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, the City Council is currently working on a logistical arrangement to have a temporary holding area for solid waste in Georgetown.According to the Mayor and Councilors of the City of Georgetown (M&CC), the routine cycle of waste collection has been disrupted because of the fire.In view of this, the Council is asking residents to be patient and cooperative as a solution is sought to the current issue that has developed. As it is,Fjallraven Kanken Backpack Australia, the M&CC is responsible for the collection and disposal of waste, but not management of the landfill site.“The Council regrets the inconvenience caused because of the existing situation,” said City Public Relations Officer (acting) Debra Lewis.Meanwhile the M&CC has met with officials of Guyana Water Inc. to address the continuous deposit of silt in the Irving Street, Church Street and North Road canals.Citizens who live along North Road, Irving and Church Streets constantly complain about the deposit of sludge by the water company. The Church Street canal was recently desilted, however the continuous deposit of sludge by the water company has resulted in a steady siltation of the canals, according to City Hall.City Engineer Colvern Venture explained that constant desilting of the Church Street canal can have negative effects on the viability of roads in the area. Also, heavy siltation of these canals has caused overtopping in Alberttown, Queenstown and other contiguous areas whenever there is a downpour. The Church Street canal has a depth of approximately eight feet. It extends from Irving Street to Main Street and serves as the main drain for Alberttown and Queenstown.Town Clerk Royston King expressed concern about the deposit of sludge in these canals. King noted that it can adversely affect the ecology because of its chemical composition. He further noted that the Council is working to ensure that the Merriman Mall area is converted to green space for the children and elderly.“This matter is of serious concern to the Georgetown Municipality,” King emphasised, as he pointed out that the Council has an environmental health mandate. The engineers of Mayor and City Council and Guyana Water Inc. are working on a plan to address these environmental issues. |
